Mouse in your house?: Simple tips to control mice and rodents …

    Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Mouse in houseAlmost all homeowners know the feeling of unease that accompanies finding mice or rodents in your home.  Whether in the kitchen, attic, basement or dining room – a rodent sighting can incite surprise and fear in even the most composed homeowner. Unfortunately, these common pests are resourceful creatures that can enter a building or home through the smallest opening or crack, and require very little space to travel inside. Mice can easily fit through spaces as small as a nickel!

Rodents seek shelter indoors, especially during the cooler fall and winter months, and once inside can cause more than just an unpleasant infestation. Rodents put homes at risk for electrical fires by gnawing through wires. More frequently, though, rodents serve as vectors, carrying bacteria, such as salmonella, on their bodies and contaminating food sources, kitchen surfaces and equipment. The common white-footed deer mouse is also known to transmit the potentially fatal Hantavirus.

Fortunately, there are many ways homeowners can proactively prevent and get rid of rodent infestations in their homes:

    1. Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
    2. Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
    3. Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home, using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both.
    4. Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
    5. Keep attics, basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
    6. Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
    7. Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains that provide the perfect breeding site for pests.
    8. Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home.
    9. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and keep shrubbery trimmed and cut back from the house.
    10. If you suspect a pest infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect and treat the pest problem.

If you spot evidence of a rodent infestation, do not hesitate to act to handle the problem. Rodents are known to reproduce quickly, and a small problem can turn into a big issue overnight if left untreated.

Rodent control and management are important for health and safety reasons. If you suspect a rodent infestation, visit our Find a Pro page to find a pest control professional in your area.

A quick, sharp memory has many practical applications at home, work and school. It can help you to learn faster, helping you to get a better job and make more money. Your memory can be easily sharpened by practicing memory techniques, and making some lifestyle changes.

Use a mnemonic device when you are trying to remember names, details or other information. These are ways of remembering something by associating each piece of information with a specific word or phrase. For example, if remembering names is not your strong point, then associating the names of your new neighbors Mike and Michelle, with the candy M&M, might give you a nudge the next time you see them.

Make a memory tree. For large subjects you need to remember, focus on the gist of it first. Let the critical details of a subject branch off like limbs. Lastly, let the little tiny details, the leaves, form off of those branches. Visualizing information in this way can help your mind stay organized, and make it easier to recall details.

Ginseng is a good supplement to take to improve your overall memory. Its ingredients have been proven to help the brain absorb and hold information. It is also good for your overall health. Another natural ingredient which has been shown to help improve memory loss is green tea.

Incoming stress makes it much easier for you to forget things. Try to stay relaxed when learning new information or when trying to recall something. Don’t become upset and impatient, just give yourself some time to remember what it is that you’re trying to recall.

If you’re trying to find methods of improving your memory, you should try laughing more often, or get somebody to tell you some jokes. Listening to jokes or figuring out the punch lines activates your brain in the learning and creativity areas. You should laugh often and make others laugh as well so that your brain and their brains are working well.

One way to boost your memory is relate the things you want to remember with information you already know. The information your short term memory processes is more likely to transfer into a long term memory if you associate it with something you are familiar with.

If there is a time when you have been given information that you do not remember, think of it your way to learn it. Memorization is difficult if people do not have a grasp of what the words mean.

Classical music is known to help improve memory. Soothing and soft music helps relax both your body and mind, and it also aids in improving memory. Try taking a warm bath and lighting some candles, while listening to classical music.

Borrow books on improving your memory from the library. There are many well known psychiatrists that have written books that will help increase your memory and brain function. You may find these sources very helpful at offering strategies for improving your own ability to remember information.

Planners and calendars are something you want to always be using. Jot everything you need to remember on your planner or calendar. Use your schedule not just to jot down upcoming commitments, but also to check daily to make sure you know what’s coming up. One of the best ways to remember things is to not rely solely on your brain. Your brain won’t have to remember as much and it’s convenient if you ever forget something.

To jog your memory on a specific thing, try injecting some humor through association. Adding a silly twist to memory exercises makes it easier for your brain to store important facts and figures.

Use it or lose it! Keep your memory sharp by playing games that stimulate your brain and keep it active. Changing up your routine will help your brain to stay alert. It need not be anything too complicated; try taking a new way to work, or tackling a thick novel. The more you challenge your mind, the better your memory will get.

If there’s a person in your life with memory issues, it’s important that you show them patience and understanding. Memory loss can be a terrible burden, and if you’re short with them, it can make their suffering even worse. If you display patience and understanding, you can help them overcome the memory loss.

Are you frustrated with your problems learning new things? Whenever you’re presented with something new that you want to recall later, mentally form associations between it and things you already know. Making a strong connection in your mind will link the new material to old and help make it easier to remember.

The tips you have read above should help greatly in improving your memory. Whether you are trying to remember what you need at the grocery store, or the date you were married, these tips should help. By using the advice in this piece, you should be ready to realize significant improvement in the way your memory works, and the ease with which you can remember things.
